What is Regenerative Medicine?

Regenerative medicine has emerged as a groundbreaking and widely supported approach to healing and recovery. This innovative treatment leverages biologics to alleviate chronic pain and repair damaged tissues, merging advanced science with practical health solutions to transform patient care. At Pain Treatment Institute, we offer biologics such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cells (BMAC) derived from a patient’s own body to accelerate the natural healing processes and to restore function. Biologic treatments are ideal for patients suffering from a variety of musculoskeletal (MKS) conditions such as arthritis, tendonitis, muscle injuries, osteoarthritis and lower back pain.

While regenerative medicine is still categorized as investigational in the U.S., a growing body of research demonstrate promising outcomes and reinforces the potential of regenerative medicine to not only alleviate symptoms but also to address underlying tissue damage effectively. Dr Syed and his team at Pain Treatment Institute are committed to the use biologics as a transformative therapy for selected candidates. As Dr. Syed at Pain Treatment Institute shares, “given the personalized nature of these therapies, it’s essential to carefully evaluate each patient’s specific condition, medical history, and overall health to determine the most appropriate and effective treatment plan.” Through medical consultation, patient education, and treatment goals, Dr. Syed and his team provide each patient with a clear and realistic overview of what regenerative therapies can achieve, followed by a tailored treatment plan that leverages the unique potential of biologic therapy.

Regenerative Medicine Treatment Options

What is the difference between PRP and Stem Cells?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) are two commonly used biologic therapies in regenerative medicine. PRP is derived from your blood and provides concentrated platelets and ideal for musculoskeletal (MKS) conditions such as arthritis, tendonitis, muscle injuries, osteoarthritis and lower back pain. BMAC is more invasive and is derived from your bone marrow and is targeted for more complex joint and bone pain. Both are considered 100% natural and derived from the patient’s own body which minimizes the risk of immune rejection; however, they differ significantly in their composition, preparation, and clinical applications. At Pain Treatment Institute, we offer both PRP and stem cell treatments for patients that can benefit from regenerative treatments.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

PRP is derived from your own blood and is considered 100% natural. Adopted by athletes and insiders, PRP is used to treat tendon injuries (like tennis elbow or Achilles tendonitis), ligament sprains, muscle injuries, and osteoarthritis in the knee. During the 30-minute procedure, the patient’s blood is drawn and then processed in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets. At Pain Treatment Institute, we utilize our own proprietary treatment protocols to maximize platelet concentration that is rich in growth factors, plasma, cytokines (proteins) and leukocytes (in specific cases). We believe patient selection is critical for PRP treatments used to accelerate healing and regeneration of injured tissues, muscles, tendons or ligaments.

Stem Cells – Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC)

Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) is rich in stem cells is considered 100% natural. BMAC is derived from the patient’s own bone marrow—commonly harvested from the iliac crest of the pelvis—and is rich in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), and growth factors that play crucial roles in tissue regeneration and repair. Dr. Syed at Pain Treatment Institute recommends BMAC in more complex joint and bone issues such as osteoarthritis, bone fractures that are slow to heal, and conditions requiring the regeneration of substantial tissue. The extraction and preparation of bone marrow for BMAC is a sophisticated process that necessitates advanced training, substantial experience, and access to a surgical procedure room. This makes it ideally suited for specialized settings like the Pain Treatment Institute, where expertise and facilities align to provide a safe and effective treatment experience.
