Pain Management Treatments
Dr. Syed uses a multimodal approach to treat pain including fluoroscopic and ultrasound-guided injections, regenerative therapy, physical therapy, medication management, psychological counseling, and neuraxial manipulations.
The goals of interventional pain management are to relieve, reduce, or manage pain and improve a patient’s overall quality of life through minimally-invasive techniques specifically designed to diagnose and treat painful conditions. Interventional pain management also strives to help patients return to their everyday activities quickly and without heavy reliance on medications. Our pain management physicians strive to use the least amount of opiate addictive medications possible to help our patients.
Pain Management Treatments
There are many types of Interventional pain management treatments our pain management physicians offer. The type of treatment you receive will be based on your specific condition and symptoms, as each type of treatment varies in terms of invasiveness. Some of the most common Pain Management techniques we use are:
- Spinal Cord Stimulation: This technique treats chronic pain by applying gentle electrical currents to the source of the pain. The spinal cord stimulator procedure inserts electrical close to the spinal column, while a tiny generator is inserted into the abdomen or buttock. The generator emits electrical signals to the spinal column, thus blocking the ability for the brain to perceive pain.
- Regenerative Therapy: Regenerative medicine therapy replaces or “regenerates” human tissue to restore normal function. The result of restoring normal function is pain relief. Our pain management physicians utilize state-of-the-art techniques when utilizing regenerative medicine.
- Medication Management: There are medications that work wonderfully to help manage acute and chronic pain. However, it is important to only take medications that you need. Medication management can work. Our pain management team will properly prescribe and manage medications that help reduce pain.
- Nerve Blocks: Chronic pain signals travel from the nerves to the brain. Nerve block treatments are used to interrupt pain signals to provide pain relief. Dr. Syed and his team will provide a customized plan to help relieve your chronic pain.
- Infusions: Another option for treating chronic pain is Infusions. This treatment involves the delivery of pain relief drugs directly into the body. These are generally for long-term use. Intrathecal Infusions are delivered into the subarachnoid space in the brain; Epidural Infusions are used in the spinal cord.
- Radiofrequency Ablation: When it comes to chronic pain, Radiofrequency Ablation treatments can be used to treat lower back and neck pain, especially when pain is caused by arthritis. This technique uses a radio wave to produce an electrical current, which is then used to heat an area of nerve tissue. This method decreases the pain signals from that area.
- Peripheral Nerve Field Stimulation: The Peripheral Nerve Field Stimulation treatment is similar to Spinal Cord Stimulation, except that it is localized on other parts of the body. The electrical leads are placed as close to the source of pain as possible and follows the same general process as Spinal Cord Stimulation.
- Discograms: A discogram is an x-ray test that diagnoses the source of back pain by injecting a special dye into the injured discs to provide a clearer view.
- Rhizotomy: A rhizotomy is performed to destroy the nerve root connected to a facet joint to help patients get relief from severe, disabling pain in the neck or back.
- Kyphoplasty: Kyphoplasty is a surgical procedure that creates space between the spinal vertebrae by using a balloon device along with a cement-like substance.
- Vertebroplasty: Vertebroplasty is a procedure that treats a spinal compression fracture by filling in the vertebra with a cement material while using x-ray guidance.
- Injections: Some common types of injections are Epidural Steroid Injections, Facet Joint Injections and Trigger Joint Injections. Each of these injections target different pain spots in the body. Injections generally include a numbing agent and a steroid.
